MEMBERSHIP BENEFITS

The Journal offers students an excellent opportunity to refine their research, writing, and editing skills. Journal membership is also a strong resume builder as legal professionals value journal membership due to its practical training. Furthermore, the Journal provides a means for students to meet new people and build relationships. This is fostered by the Journal’s mentorship program, where a Candidate Member is paired with a full member. Consequently, while the Journal requires hard work, the environment is friendly. Lastly, each Candidate Member has the opportunity to be considered for publication in the following year’s volume.

CANDIDATE MEMBER SELECTION PROCESS

GMU law students in good standing who have completed their first year of law school are eligible to join the Journal. Transfer students are also eligble. To apply, eligible students must participate in the Write-On Competiion. The Journal will select students on the basis of their comment submission, the Bluebook exam, GPA, and resume. Students may submit an additional interest statement. While the comment submission is heavily weighed, the Journal reserves the right to select incoming members based on an overall evaluation.

CANDIDATE MEMBER RESPONSIBILITIES

Each Candidate Member has several responsibilities. First, a Candidate Member is required to write a scholarly article of publishable quality. An article must be a minimum of 25 pages double-spaced. To assist in writing their article, the law school offers a course (Scholarly Writing) that each Candidate Member must take. Second, Candidate Members are given spading assignments. These assignments consist of reviewing footnotes to ensure accuracy and proper formatting.

Full membership is contingent upon satisfactory completion of these requirements.
